Melly Stories

As Wendi was getting dinner ready she realized that she was missing a few items and sent me to the store. I decided to take Alex with me and I was trying to sneak out without Melly noticing. As I was strapping Alex into the car I heard the front door slam. Out comes Melly in nothing but her dora panties. All shame cast aside, running barefoot across the 20 degree cement Melly ran up to me. I prepared to tell her that she couldn't go because she wasn't dressed, but before I got a word out between her tears and sobs she cried, "Daddy, I need a hug and a kiss." I hadn't told her goodbye. Once she got her goodbye she happily ran back inside to continue working on her play-dough creations.

After I got back from the store as dinner neared completion I started cleaning up the play-dough. Melly wasn't ready to clean up and threw a fit. Mom sent her to time out and told her, "Melly, don't have a cow." Again with tears in her eyes she responded, "I don't want any cows!"

Through the rest of the evening she continued to tell us that she, "Didn't want any cows."

Added Counter Space

When we bought our house I had mixed feelings about this "appliance garage". It turns out that we didn't use it and we would rather have the extra counter space. We also figured out that because it is next to the sink when we rinse dishes the extra water goes inside. While cleaning it out we figured out that bugs like it inside because it stays damp. So with all the things like bugs, mold, and wasted counter space we decided to take it out.

It looks so much better after it's gone. We gained about 3 square feet of counter space. It's been great. In fact it's weird to think that it was ever there to begin with.

Pew pew

Preface: Melynn and I have a little thing we do. When I put her to bed we both do the sign for I love you with our hands. We then touch our fingers together and make little gun noises, "pew pew". I don't know how the whole thing started, but it's a little thing daddy and Melly do.

Today Wendi put Melly down for her nap, at the end Melly requested that I come give her a kiss. I went in and kissed her good night and left the room. A few minutes later we hear her knocking on her bedroom door. Of course our first reaction was to tell her, "Melly you're not getting up from your nap, go to bed." She continued to knock and knock. Finally she broke down crying and I went to go see what the problem was. I walked in and almost yelled at her, but instead I waited to see what she wanted.

As soon as she saw me she said, "Daddy, I love you" and making the sign for I love you, "Pew Pew" I had forgotten to do our little ritual and she was very upset.

Just melted my heart.

The Cleaning Critic

For those of you who don't know the nightmares of having linoleum it can be difficult to thoroughly clean. There are grooves and patterns that dirt gets stuck in. I spent two hours yesterday just scrubbing the bathroom floor on my knees with a scrub brush and 409. When I was done it looked amazing. I had pretty much gotten all the dirt out. There are two paint spots from when we painted the house that are stuck there and we haven't removed them because someday we plan to replace the flooring.

A few hours later I'm getting ready for a date with Peter and Melly comes waking into the bathroom and says, "Mommy you cleaned the floors."

I responded, "Yep, I did"

Noticing a small black dot of paint she says, "Mommy, there's a little bit of dirty here."

I responded, "Yep, I couldn't get that spot off."

Melly: "Oh and a little bit of dirty over here."

Me: "Okay Melly, you don't need to critique my cleaning job. But, yes that's paint too. I couldn't get it up either."

Conversation with Melly

Melly: Mommy, where's daddy?

Wendi: Daddy's taking a shower.

Melly: He's sitting down washing his body?

Wendi: Yep

Melly: He can't sit down, he'll break the tub. (now with fear in her voice) He can't sit down, he'll break the tub.

Wendi: Okay Melly, he won't sit down.

Melly: He can't sit down, he'll break the tub, his bum is big.

After that Wendi was laughing too hard to continue the conversation.

Bonus - One of our family traditions is that my mom makes all kinds of gross food items for Halloween. I have a pretty strong stomach and there are always a few items I can't gag down. Not that the food is bad, but it's amazing how hard it is to stomach a meatball when it's shaped like a cat turd and served in kitty litter. This year in addition to the cat turds there were severed fingers, dirty bath water, and worms in dirt. But not the harmless gummy worms in oreo cookie crumbs. These worms looked real. I wondered for a bit if she hit the bait fridge at the sporting goods store after grocery shopping. I have no idea how she made them and she never divulges her secrets. But of everything on the table, no one even touched the worms, they were that gross.

I don't know what happened to prompt the following comment from Melly but I assume my brother Scott tried to feed a worm to Alex.

What makes this comment funny is that she didn't say it when the event happened, we were on the way home and this popped out of the blue.

"No, no, no, giving Alex worms Scott!" Repeated multiple times with "That's gross" interjected now and then.

Melly-isms

Tonight we were in the car and Wendi and I were chatting away not paying attention to the kids when out of nowhere Melly says, "Mommy, my toe is hatching"

Turns out she had some skin peeling off her toe and decided that meant it was hatching.

Camera Strap

This craft looks really cute from afar, but upon closer inspection looks like crap. Trial and error I guess. And NO it cannot be removed, it's all sewn on.

Butterflies Framed

This craft cost about $18 and two hours of my time. I bought the frame at walmart and the butterfly punch on sale at Roberts craft. Anyway it turned out awesome.
